Existing vegetation and wildland fuel layers are being updated through the LANDFIRE Refresh to maintain the currency of data sets to: 1) reflect changes resulting from recent (1999 or later) natural disturbances (such as wildland fires) and management activities and 2) address discrepancies that were detected after the initial mapping effort. A key component in the development of LANDFIRE existing vegetation and fuel layers has been satellite imagery; however, some of these data originated as far back as 1999. Existing vegetation and fire behavior fuel layers are being updated through the LANDFIRE Refresh to reflect changes that occurred from 1999-2008. LANDFIRE Refresh products comprise a comprehensive set of updated vegetation and fuel layers. Refresh products will be delivered on an incremental basis regionally through 2010. The LANDFIRE team plans to incorporate into a Refresh reference database all available spatial data depicting wildland fires and land-management activities, as well as information that can be used to improve the existing maps of vegetation and fuel for the nation. For more information about Refresh data needs and details on how to participate, please click here. The information must be associated with polygons on the landscape (rather than points) and must be from 1999 or later. Digital photos, vegetation or fuel plot data, and project descriptions or final reports are also valuable and likewise requested, if available. Similar to the Rapid Refresh updates, Refresh data updates will be made based upon field-provided polygons.
