Reference Fire Regimes
LANDFIRE Rapid Assessment (RA) reference fire regimes are classified into five groups that describe the frequency and severity of fire that would occur across landscapes under the natural range of variability, including the influence of aboriginal burning. These classes are defined in the Interagency Fire Regime Condition Class Guidebook (Hann and others 2004) and include the following:
| Fire Regime I | 0 to 35 year frequency; low and mixed severity |
| Fire Regime II | 0 to 35 year frequency; replacement severity |
| Fire Regime III | 35 to 200 year frequency; low and mixed severity |
| Fire Regime IV | 35 to 200 year frequency; replacement severity |
| Fire Regime V | 200+ year frequency; replacement severity |
Additional data layer values were included to represent non-vegetated types (such as water, snow/ice, and barren), wetlands, alpine, and unclassified vegetation (in other words, vegetation types that were not classified during the RA process).
LANDFIRE Rapid Assessment reference fire regimes were mapped directly from the RA Potential Natural Vegetation Groups (PNVGs) spatial data layer based on assignments made to each RA PNVG model. For more information about RA PNVG descriptions and modeling, please visit the RA Reference Condition Models section of this website.
