Quantitative state-and-transition biophysical settings (BpS) models were created for the LANDFIRE Project through a series of expert workshops. At these workshops, vegetation and fire ecology experts created models describing the BpS for their area using the Vegetation Dynamics Development Tool (VDDT) – available at www.essa.com/vddt. Each model includes a description document, which describes the geographic range, characteristic vegetation, and disturbance processes for the BpS. An extensive peer review process following model development garnered additional expert engagement and helped to refine the models. Completed models are used to help map BpS, succession classes, and fire regime groups.
You can now download vegetation dynamics models for the lower 48 states. Models for Alaska and Hawaii will be available fall 2009.
