LF National Map Download/Access: Users may see the viewer partially load, or receive error messages, and then are able to get the viewer to run after several reload attempts.  While using the viewer, sometimes the map images will not update properly, or when a user tries to download the data, they receive a server unavailable error message.

Background:

The LANDFIRE National Viewer is an HTML/JavaScript application that downloads approximately 80 different HTTP requests when it is initially loaded. On a slower connection (i.e. dial-up modem) this will take some time to download. After the initial load, more than half of these files should be cached by the users web browser, and subsequent loading of the viewer should be much faster. During the initial load, the viewer has to send three to four requests to the server to generate the initial map information based upon the current size of the browser window. Currently EROS LANDFIRE National Map is tracking a problem where some of these HTTP requests fail.

Advice:

Unfortunately, there is not a lot the user can do to work around this issue.  EROS has several initiatives in place to try and work around this, and hopes to release those soon. As a general rule of thumb, users on faster Internet connections have fewer problems. Also, there is a separate issue with Internet Explorer that has Service Pack 2 installed, where the viewer uses up excessive system memory, which exacerbates this problem.  At this time, we recommend that users attempt to reload their browser and if they continue to experience problems, please contact EROS Customer Services.  There is a link included at the top of the LANDFIRE National Viewer with more information related to download issues.
