ArcMap Problems with Layer Symbology Display

Background:

When adding certain LANDFIRE layers to ArcMap, the layer appears as mostly black, although the Symbology display is set to Unique Values.

Advice:

A field other than Value must be selected from the Symbology tab under Layer Properties. Right-click on the layer name in the Table of Contents window and select Properties. Click on the Symbology tab in the Layer Properties window. Under the Value Field, select a field other than Value, for example EVT_NAME, and click Apply. The layer should now display with normal colors. A second option is to choose ColorMap under Show: and then click Apply.
